There is no right answer for every family. Staying home can be safe and realistic with the right support and changes. Assisted living can be the better choice when needs outgrow what a home can reasonably handle. The goal is to decide on purpose, not in a crisis.
Four questions to work through
1. What does your parent want?
Start here. Their preferences, and their right to make the decision, matter most.
2. Can the house work?
Entry steps, bathroom layout, doorway widths, and a first-floor bedroom make a big difference. A Home Safety Assessment shows what changes are needed and roughly what they involve.
3. Is the support there?
Who helps day to day? Is home care needed, and is it affordable for the long term? Who coordinates appointments and providers?
4. What happens if things change?
A plan for staying home should include what would trigger a different decision later.
